About the opportunity
Dalhousie University invites applications for a 0.4 FTE Associate Head in the Department of Family Medicine (Halifax). The Associate Head position is a five-year, limited-term appointment. The successful applicant will also be offered a continuing academic appointment in the department. The Associate Head position is subject to renewal for a second five-year term, conditional on satisfactory annual performance evaluations and a positive review of the first term as Associate Head. Candidates will be active staff with central zone Department of Family Practice, Nova Scotia Health and potentially the IWK. This position offers exciting opportunities for professional development within academic family medicine in a dynamic department with over 800 community-based family physicians in 64 communities in the three Maritime provinces.

This position is responsible for Nova Scotia central zone-based programming in Family Medicine. This includes working collaboratively with the Family Medicine Department Head and other stakeholders on Nova Scotia residency expansion plans. As a member of the Halifax based academic group, the Associate Head will work closely with other academic and clinical leaders within the central zone.

Responsibilities:
· In collaboration with the Department Head and the NSH central zone Family Practice Lead, the Associate Head promotes engagement, academic development, collaboration, understanding, and relationship building amongst academic and community-based family physicians and other primary care providers in the central zone.
· In collaboration with the Department Head, NSH central zone Family Practice Lead, IWK Family Practice Chief, and other NSH representatives, the Associate Head oversees the implementation of residency expansion plans in the central zone.
· Collaborating with the Department Head, Residency Program Site Director and Assistant Site Directors, ensures excellence in postgraduate clinical and academic teaching and involvement of faculty in leadership roles and committee work.
· Connects with the Department Head, who will oversee the promotion of the undergraduate role of the Department of Family Medicine,
· Connects with the Residency, Undergraduate, Faculty Development, Research and Medical Directors as required.
· Participates on academic committees appointed by the Department Head, including chairing the AFP Halifax Executive and Recruitment Committees and attending central zone ZMAC meetings.
· In alignment with NSH central zone Family Practice academic priorities, and in collaboration with the NSH central zone Family Practice Lead, promotes and develops community-based medical education in the central zone. This includes facilitating the recruitment of community faculty and preceptors.

The successful candidate must have CFPC certification and be a current and ongoing member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. The successful candidate must also be eligible to obtain a full license to practice in Nova Scotia and be qualified to provide obstetrical or nursing home care. Favourable consideration will be given to those applicants who have evidence of advanced academic competencies such as relevant Masters degrees or other Certificates.
Academic rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, with an appointment commencing as early as February 27, 2023. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
