Job Summary
Reporting to General Counsel, the Privacy Officer is responsible for the development, oversight and administration of Dalhousie University’s privacy policies, procedures and protocols and for the administration of requests for access under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPOP). The Privacy Officer role requires the ability to independently manage priorities and resources (includes supervision) with minimal oversight. The Privacy Officer supervises and delegates work to the Access and Privacy Specialist.
Key Responsibilities
  • Administers the University’s responsibilities in responding to requests for access under the FOIPOP – receiving and evaluating applications.
  • Reviews and provides advice to departments and units concerning the completion of privacy impact analysis on new and revised initiatives, applications, infrastructure and programs.
  • Administers the process to facilitate the University’s reporting requirements under the Personal Information International Disclosure Protection Act.
  • Develops and delivers education and training for university faculty and staff in relation to the University’s privacy obligations and best practices.
  • Develops best practices, guidelines and protocols in relation to the management of personal information to support the activities and programs across campus (including personal health information).
  • Work collaboratively with Legal Counsel, Information Technology Services and other units as required to respond to and provide advice regarding privacy breaches or incidents.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field, with approximately seven years’ related experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Training and knowledge of privacy and access to information laws and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills, high attention to detail, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Solid experience in working with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a complex and multi-stakeholder environment.
Assets
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP).
  • Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Experience in working in a post-secondary setting.
