Job Summary
Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate will be primarily responsible for sustaining a fast-paced and cutting-edge level of research in the Obrovac lab, including maintaining and upgrading equipment, researcher training, developing new techniques, and exploring new avenues for research.
Key Responsibilities
  • Train postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate researchers in lab safety and technical procedures including electrode slurry preparation, electrode casting, coin cell assembly, and in-situ x-ray experiments.
  • Train postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate researchers on the use of equipment such as glove boxes, cell chargers, x-ray diffractometer, electron microscope, BET surface area analyzer, argon ion cross-section polisher, furnaces, ball mills, and Mössbauer spectrometer.
  • Install new equipment, maintain existing equipment and order lab supplies. Maintenance may include changing, replacing, or repairing vacuum pumps, equipment bearings, furnace thermocouples, etc.
  • Design and fabricate new equipment or modify existing equipment. Create technical drawings, procure parts, and coordinate equipment fabrication with machine shops.
  • Conduct exploratory research to scope new research directions for students’ research projects and conduct research and background art searches for patent applications.
  • Assist students by editing manuscripts, as well as writing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Evening or weekend work may be required to meet operational requirements.

The Research Associate will need to be fitted with a respirator and will work in conditions where respirator use is mandatory.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering with 3 years of related experience in the operation of scientific instrumentation, including x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy.
  • Research experience in materials chemistry.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in authoring manuscripts for scientific journals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a mechanical aptitude for the design, repair, and maintenance of mechanical and electronic devices.
Assets
  • PhD degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering.
  • Research experience in lithium-ion battery materials.
