Job Summary
The Budget Office is responsible for management and oversight of the Operating Budget for Dalhousie University and provides expertise, advice and support to Faculties and Units in the areas of accounting, policy and budget administration. Reporting to the Manager, Budget Administration, the Senior Budget Analyst is responsible for managing a portfolio of unique and complex budget units and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
  • Advise unit administrators on budget preparation and throughout fiscal cycle, providing a high level of service, training and guidance.
  • Advise on University policies and practices on budget and accounting, and collaborate and advise on solutions to meet operating budget reductions and make suggestions to address unique budgetary challenges.
  • Work with portfolio of units to complete budget submissions ensuring accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness.
  • Perform trend analysis and investigate variances and share results with unit, providing training on best practices by using professional judgement to question significant variances and issues of concern.
  • Prepare financial reports, reconciliations and working papers as necessary and in response to reporting deadlines, using advanced data manipulation and reporting tools.
  • Review the outcomes of the incrementing process, analyze and prepare recommendations for further actions.

Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance and a professional accounting designation (i.e. CPA), plus a minimum 5 years’ progressively responsible experience in finance (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) with demonstrated ability to handle complex and confidential matters with excellent judgement, discretion and tact.
  • Experience performing complex analysis, strong analytical and problem-solving skills and demonstrated organizational ability to multitask with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated strong financial management experience with critical attention to detail, and time management and organizational skills are required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with advanced Excel.
