Job Summary
The mission of the Department of Medical Neuroscience is to foster research and training in neuroscience that advances the understanding and treatment of diseases of the nervous system. Reporting to the Manager, Human Donation Program, the Coordinator will work independently to provide coordination and administrative support for the daily activities of the Human Donation Program for the Maritime Provinces (NS, PEI and NB) on behalf of the Department of Medical Neuroscience.
Key Responsibilities
  • Advise and instruct potential donors, families and health care providers on the process and procedures for donating human remains to the program. Coordinate acceptances, refusals, brain/body requests.
  • Compose letters of acceptance and refusal on behalf of the Inspector of Anatomy, provide acknowledgement by email and telephone, and respond to in-person queries. Coordinate mail outs to all hospitals, long term care facilities, special care facilities and funeral homes.
  • Communicate with institutions to gather sensitive information for new donors not in the Human Donation program stream and arrange for disposition with families and funeral homes. Prepare and cancel bonds for accepted remains. Support the Inspector of Anatomy with issuing death statements.
  • Receive and acknowledge intention to donate forms, compile and analyze monthly and yearly summaries of statistics pertaining to the program. Collect and maintain all information to preserve the historical documentation.
  • Coordinate with other members of the Human Donation team to help organize the annual memorial and interment service. Support staff in Halifax and Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick personnel with coordinating the annual memorial service in NB.
  • Liaise with health professionals, care providers, clergy, funeral homes, University personnel, legal counsel, provincial Departments of Health, Office of the Public Trustee and lawyers from the Maritime Provinces to ensure smooth and efficient delivery of the program.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
  • Diploma in Funeral and Allied Health Services from NSCC or valid license as Embalmer/Funeral Director to practice within Nova Scotia plus approximately three (3) years’ experience in a funeral home or death care facility (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated solid understanding of the acts that regulate the handling of Human Remains in the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
  • Proven strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a highly sensitive and confidential field with proven tact and empathy.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy and organizational skills.
