Job Summary
Founded on the principles of independence, impartiality, confidentiality, informality, accessibility and fairness, the Ombudsperson provides guidance to students in navigating and using University and Dalhousie Student Union policies and processes. This position promotes the review and discussion of systemic concerns; it brings policy and procedural matters to the attention of those in authority. The incumbent will recommend new changes to existing policies and procedures to facilitate continuous improvement of Dalhousie’s and the Dalhousie Student Union’s policies, procedures, and practices.
Key Responsibilities
  • Identify, build and maintain strategic and constructive relationships with all constituencies of the University and Student Union, including faculty and staff members, Senior Leaders, students and other individuals and groups.
  • Provide general resource information to all those involved in student-serving processes, including students, administrators, faculty, and staff and make appropriate referrals.
  • Work in a collaborative and complementary manner with Dalhousie Student Advocacy Services, Student Affairs, Human Rights and Equity Services and other relevant offices of the University and Student Union.
  • Design and deliver workshops and resources on key duties, skills and legal principles including fairness in decision-making, bias, challenging communications, restorative approaches, and conflict resolution.
  • Build awareness of the existence and autonomy of the Ombudsperson through development and implementation of communications strategy, orientation workshops and materials.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and practices for the Ombudsperson’s Office in line with the Terms of Reference, Ombud’s best practices and in consultation with the Ombudsperson Advisory Committee (OAC).

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field with five to seven years’ experience in a post-secondary or public sector environment preferably in an Ombudsperson role (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Demonstrated success using restorative approaches to conflict resolution.
  • Experience in administration and understanding of procedural fairness, working in a diverse community, including skills in cultural competence, developing, and maintaining strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, and handling confidential information.
