About the Organization
The Giacomantonio and Marcato Laboratories at Dalhousie University undertake collaborative research activities. Together, these laboratories focus on developing improved therapeutic strategies for breast cancer and novel immune-modulating agents. Their combined efforts aim to translate cutting-edge scientific discoveries into effective clinical treatments.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Principal Investigators, this role will primarily involve animal technician responsibilities, including handling and maintaining mouse colonies, with additional duties in molecular biology and lab management. The full-time dedicated technician will support the collaborative research activities of The Giacomantonio and Marcato Laboratories at Dalhousie University, with responsibilities split equally between the two labs.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the implementation of clinically based studies and basic science experiments.
  • Perform mouse handling and related procedures, including colony maintenance, tumor model studies, injections, ear clippings, and monitoring animal health.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret molecular biology data (e.g. qPCR) with a high level of accuracy.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring a clean and safe lab environment in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Manage and organize laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Collaborate with other lab members and external partners to ensure the smooth execution of research projects.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate or a Master’s degree in a related field (e.g. Immunology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences).
  • Previous laboratory experience, particularly in a research setting. Ability to follow established protocols and maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records. Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in relevant experimental approaches, such as qPCR, flow cytometry, and other molecular biology techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot experimental protocols.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Excellent attention to detail, effective verbal and written communication skills, and excellent time management skills.

  • Experience with mouse handling and related procedures.
